Hello, I am having a problem replacing disk 0 (the bottom disk with the OS on it). The problem is with the windows home server setup. I get a message saying "server initialization failed". I have tried with all 4 disks in a few times, rebooting and reinstalling the software. I have just tried again with disk 1, 2, and 3 removed, but still the same problem. The unit seems to be alive though. I have popup messages saying "network health critical". Remote desktop works, up to the point where it asks for a password, which of course I no longer have.

Do I have to do something with the master slave setting of the new hard drive? I am thinking not, as I have not read that anywhere.

The original disk 0 has failed. It was 750Mb. The new disk is 2Tb, the only 3.5 inch disk in stock at the store. It is a WD blue.

Currently all blue lights on the server are blinking slowly and in unison. This, from what I read, means that the server has not yet been initiated from a PC. Which is correct.

Should I take out the hard drive and run a checkdisk on it from my laptop???

okay the basics is:
run a recovery not restore with the cd running on the pc for the new os drive.
Follow the directions on thew cd and place the server in recovery mode
All pool drives inserted . Never pull the pool drives for recovery.
Then you get the pulsing blue led. Not blinking
Then install the connector software on a pc. using the other cd.
The pulsing will stop when the first pc is connected.

The trick is it needs to be in recovery mode before running the recover cd.
This sometimes takes several attempts
Via using a paperclip in the small hole on the front bottom during boot.
Or pull the os drive out a bit boot it up and then wait a bit then slide it back in.
The health should change to a violet when in recovery mode.

But it sounds like you are ready to run the connector install on the pc.
After deleting what is installed already.
This is another quirk.
The connector software will update on the server after a day or so a few times and you will need to reinstall the connector on the pc after each update

It is working again, with the original disk. I hooked up the malfunctioning disk (disk 0 with the OS on it) to my laptop and did a chckdisk on it. It found no problems. Re-installed the original disk into the server again, and now it is working! Weird.

Not really.
Could be the drive needed to be re-seated for a better connection of when you ran chakdisk fixed something whithout your knowledge.
If you ran chkdsk within windows it will usually only report fail errors.
Meaning could not repair.
