I began using a MediaSmart user in early 2009. It's been a great solution for my small business for years. I am glad to find this forum as I find the MediaSmart can handle all my needs (still).

I am using:
Windows Home Server with Power Pack 3
Windows Home Server Console: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Backup & Restore: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Drive Extender: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Remote Access: 6.0.3436.0
Windows Home Server Storage Manager: 6.0.3039.0

I recently ran into a question to which I may have found the answer, but need it spelled out... My windows 10 laptop is backed up to the server. A file on my pc corrupted and I want to restore the old file from April 2016. The oldest client backup available on the MediaSmart is May 31, 2016 and after the file corrupted. I didn't worry about it as I backup the server regularly to an external drive. I thought I could review the server backups to get to the client pc backups, but I don't seem to be able to do that.

1. Is there a solution that I can use to find the original file from April or is it gone?
2. Would the WHS Backup Database-Backup (BDBB) ADD-IN solve the problem from happening again?

Thank you.

The Whs BackUp database is non-readable outside of the server.
That is why I tell all my clients to keep all their data on the server, because the backup database can become corrupt and you can have to delete it all, sometimes. The backups are nice to have, but I don't count on them for that reason.

If all the clients data is on the server in folders with duplication turned on, that data can be backed up.

The add-in database back up could be a good thing, but it is something you would need to store somewhere and do it on a regular basis.

I prefer my method because I Synctoy all the shared folders to another server so I have lots of backups of all the data.
The clients are told, "Anything kept local may be lost" that is normally enough for them to start using the folders :-)

Hope this helps, Not really a direct answer to you question, my guess is that file is gone.

Good Luck
P.S. Glad to hear you backup the server to non-pooled drives, I do that as well, which means I have 4 copies of my data.
Overkill, but I can't lose it. :-)

Yes, it was gone. Thank you for the post though. It does give me ideas of what to do and I now use that method.

There are settings for how far back to keep backups.
So for the future you may consider extending them from what you have now.
But remember the more backups you keep the more storage is used.

For example you could set monthly backups to keep up to a year.
