Hi sohail579 welcome to the forums!

Are you saying that the Hard Drive Lights Stay RED or just turn Red and then turn off? I understand this occurs with or without drives installed but that behavior typically only occurs when there is a complete power loss and when power is restored the hard drive lights will turn on RED briefly then turn off.

The EX470 Fan behavior when you first turn it on they will run full speed for a brief moment then slow down. This occurs during the BIOS Boot Post. The health light being PURPLE I have seen before with a motherboard which was functional but had a hardware failure.

Tell me prior to this happening did you happen to have the server apart and if so can you pop the top off the server and check the fan connections to make sure they are not off by 1 pin. Also prior to this occurring did you press in and hold the Status/Recovery Button in for a long period of time? This is the button you need to use a paper clip to press in.

One more thing. Prior to this happening did you experience any issues with the server shutting down without any reason or did you have a power failure and is your server protected by a UPS?

Currently I am not sure what if anything can be done to correct the condition your describing but if it can not be corrected and you would like to replace the server with another EX470 or other model MSS then let me know because I have working units available.

Thanks for the speedy response Comp1962

To answer your first question the Red Hard Drive lights stay on, and RE the fans they dont slow down also to then power it off you have to pull the plug holding the power button does nothing.

The last time i had the server apart was to upgrade the RAM and this was done about 5 years ago and its been running flawlessly since. i dont have a UPS and prior to the last boot it was shut down correctly through the software and i have had no power cuts i was away for a few days so i shut it down..

not sure what im doing yet im hoping that i can try fix this one

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Please review the following link and in that link there are references to another link which I will list here as the 2nd Link in the listing. See if this helps but its not an easy thing to do.

This is one thing I never observed in an MSS as to when the drives actually spin up but I would expect them to turn on when power is applied to the unit. I just went into the other room to run on an EX470 and had to place my ear up close to it to hear the drives when I turned it on and the fans fire up first then I could hear the drives although they were very hard to hear.

If you can get you hands on a copy of WHSv1 OEM then you could move your server drives to a computer and perform a recovery using the COA Key on the bottom of your EX470 to get your server setup back up and running. You would need to gather all the drivers for that computer to setup the server. There is a big difference in how the recovery is done from what your use to with the EX470 and the OEM version but I have done this in the past not so much to actually run a server rather to just verify it could be done.

Moving forward you could also acquire another EX470 or EX475 and just install your drives and be backup and running with no additional work on your part. There may be plenty of available EX47x units in the UK. I happen to have working units available but the VAT and Shipping would make it not worth sending a unit out to you.

There is an entire thread full of information on all the processors everyone has ever tried on their EX470. You will also need to modify the BIOS to get the processor to work. There are only a few processors which are known to work well with the EX470. The ones I use are the BE2300 and ADD3800.

Here is the thread where other forum members have discussed the processors they have used: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1102

Hate to be the wet blanket, but I would swap out all the drives and see if you have a running machine before souping it up.
OR, better yet, try to pickup a newer model ex-490 ex-495 then you can get some real horsepower.

When I trouble shoot I try to keep the changes to a minimum, stick the drives in and make sure to have solved your problem first. If not, then you will be looking at drives.

Also, If you have not done so I would give that old ex-470 and good cleaning, Dust bunnies plugging up power supplies and other air flow areas can cause big problems.

Just some Ideas that Might help, or not. My first failure was a ex-470 power supply. I took that moment to upgrade.
Wishing you good luck whatever you decide to do..
