For those using Western Digital Advance Format Align Software this might be well worth reading:

I have 2 WD EARS drives that I wanted to install in one of my EX470's. These are Advanced Format Drives but when I connected them in an eSATA Connected Port Multiplier thats connected to a Win 7 64bit client the WD ALIGN software did not properly identify them as Advanced Format. At first I thought maybe this was because I may have previously aligned them but this was not the case.

I installed the WD Align Software on the EX470 itself where the software works properly and proceeded to align not jumper the drives to be used in the EX470 which is running WHS v1.

This is an issue that I was never aware of and have used this software in the past to determine if a drive was or was not and AF Drive. While WD itself mentions the software is suppose to be run on the older Operating Systems I assumed that since the software would run on my client that it would atleast function well enough to identify the drives and if necessary align them or complain the software was not compatable with the the OS.

Long story short anyone running WD Align Software should run it on an XP Client or install it on the server to properly align the drives for use with WHSv1. While the drives can be jumpered for single partition use I think its better to just bite the bullet, format, align then add the drive to the storage pool.
