So I decided to rebuild my WHS after a hard drive failure. I bought a copy of WHS and installed it on a fresh drive by hooking it up to a different PC with video capabilities. After I completed this, I did all the updates. I then put the drive into the HP MediaSmart slot and when I started it up, I can't connect to it or find it with the connector software. I put it back into the other PC and was able to find it with the connector software as well as ping it and remote desktop into it. Once it goes back into the HP frame, I no longer can locate it on the network or ping it, even if I put in a set IP address. I've tried to find creative ways to make this headless system viewable so I can at least see what is happening when I press power but with no success. The hard drive lights do not light up and on bottom, the health icon flashes red and blue. If I hold in the reset button with a pin, it stays solid on a white / red color. I am all out of ideas on how to revive this... help!

The problem is that you will need to install the drivers that the EX470 needs to atleast get the NIC running so you can connect to it.

Thanks... I had a feeling it was related to that but I've been unable to locate exactly where those drivers are. Would you happen to know?

Thanks...

Even if you had the drivers, being headless, you'll have no way of adding them.
I would suggest, re-doing the load the normal way.

Take that new drive out, reformat it in another PC just to make sure.
Connect the server direct to a win xp 32-bit pc with cat5 cable and do a factory reset using the win xp 32-bit pc to run the disk.

This is the way this headless system was designed to be loaded.
It will take 4-6 hours most likely and do not rush it.

Goodluck

Ya one does have to be patient with the recoveries. My last 3.0 recovery on an EX470 took 4 hours alone before I could begin to reconfigure the server. Even with a debug cable I found myself being impatiant because the past recoveries only took about 2 hours from start to finish.

This weekend I will be performing a factory recovery on my primary server not because its running awefully bad but because I see things I just do not like and desire to start fresh and only install the bare minimum of ADD-INs and utilities I currently use. Everything on the primary server is backed up in multiple locations but also exists on the WHS2011 Test Server so I can still stream my content and access files but I use the Primary Server to direct traffic to all my servers to make things easier for those who access my servers.

Thanks for that advice... could you please clarify what you mean by "do a factory reset"?
