I have a 475 with the two original 500 GB drives in it. I picked up a new 1.5 TB drive to add to the server. When I plug it in I get nothing, no lights, nothing on the console, nothing if I RDP in. The backplane is obviously working as the two other drives are working. I tried plugging the new drive into my workstation, and both times it took three reboots on the workstation before it would show up (Win7). Any thoughts on how to proceed? NewEgg has a 30 day return & replacement policy, I'm starting to think that while the drive might not be totally DOA, its mighty close.

Any thoughts? Are there any known issues with 475's and the backplane?

Thanks much in advance,
-R

If it took 3 tries in your workstation, I'd suspect a DOA drive.

I agree with yakuza even if the drive appears to be functional now. If the drive was not operating properly in the beginning then it will come back and haunt you in the near future if you were continue to use.

If you want to rule out the back plane on your EX475 just plug in another know working drive but do not add it to your storage pool. If it shows up its obviously not the backplane.

I see you mention having to reboot your Win7 workstation 3 times before it would show up. This is not normal the drive should show up in Disk Management on Win7 which is part of Computer Management right away. Its there you would need to set a new drive up before it will be properly seen by Win7 but in WHS the console would display it right away.

Thanks guys. I don't have any empty SATA drives lying around. Is there any risk to the data if I plug a formatted drive into the WHS and do not do anything in the console, other then to verify it shows up?

Thanks,
-R

No risk at all as long as you do not have WHS do anything with the drive. It will be listed outside your storage pool as an unmanaged drive.

Even if you were to add it in a say a backup drive there would be an option to leave the data on the drive intact. Just rule out any concerns you have for your backplane so you can put that concern to rest.

One thing about backplanes in the MSS is that when you remove or instert them care must be taken not to knock a component off them. One common occurance posted by others is that some have knocked off capacitors on the backplane. There are 8 of them on the back side which would be facing the fans.

Here is a picture of what they look like.

Grabbed a different SATA drive and put it into the 475 and got the purple LED & it showed up in the console without any issue. RMA'ing the problem drive.

Thanks for your feedback.
