Hi there,

I am after almost a year , again with a question about my HP Data Vault X510 there. First, I want all forum users say hello and hope you are doing well !

After the CPU and RAM upgrade in the last year (I'm still happy ), I would like to incorporate this year in my X510 a SSD with 256GB WHS2011 as system HDD .
The playfulness comes through and I'd like to make something again .

The server shuts down on LightsOut at night and starts again until a client starts or a WOL signal is sent from a Tablet from (Manual)
I am hoping that only a faster server start and if something more to speed it comes out I 'm looking forward even more !
The system we installed on a USB stick with a corresponding cfg.ini .
The materials that I want to use I have listed in the attached document.

Has anyone done such a conversion and thus gained experience ?
What else should I also consider?
Does the system so work?

Thanks in advance for the answers now !

Best regards from Germany !
Nikonlaus

excuse my english! ;-)

What your looking to do is fine. Gardian ran WS2012E on an X510 and I believe he actually mirrored a couple drives but in a different ICY DOCK unit. I have installed WHS2011 in an EX485 in a 2 bay ICY DOCK using RAID 1 and its worked out well. For my more serious WHS2011 builds I do use an SSD.

You can also search for users with an EX49x as the hardware is the same as the X510 with the on difference being the processor but everyone seems to change those out anyway but the motherboards are the same in those units.

Hello Comp1962

Thanks for the info, when I have rebuilt the server I will inform here. Since I currently do not have time to have it will take some time with the rebuild.

Thank you again!
Greetings from Germany

You can load any server version on a ssd in the x-510.
I have loaded the stock HP software.
I have loaded whs 2011
I have loaded whs 2012E
All on ssd and spinners.

Icydock has two items that are great for doing this.
1) it is a black plastic 2.5 to 3.5 converter and fits in the bottom bay just like a normal 3.5 drive.
2) They have one that will hold 2 2.5 drives which can be mirrored (that I only tried whs2012e on.

It really does speed things up and with the price of ssd falling I am looking at the 1 tb ssd for a system drive but I know it would be a waste of money.

How will the server wear an ssd is unknown as I don't think anybody has done it long term.
But to answer your question, with an adapter yes you can use a ssd in a x-510, your just going to lose 1.5 +/- storage space since they are kind of small.
Goodluck and enjoy.

Hi there,

now it's done, the SSD is installed and the system is running very well and stable. The system performance has improved significantly. My HP-DataVault will be shut down via lights-out every day, so i can see, that the start performance boost significantly.

Thanks again for the tips!!

Iwish you a good time!!

The icydock raid has been discontinued, but i think a person can find them for awhile. The bad part about them is the "SMART" program can not see the status of the drives, but since they are mirrored, I don't worry about that to much.
SSD does make it faster, the question is how long will they last?
I have had two ssd go south, 1 was about a year old in my dvd / audio ripper so it had lots of reads and writes, I installed the SMART program on it and it came up RED warning replace drive 0 life left, I quickly bought two samsungs evo 250 ssd and cloned one before it died.

SSD are fast, no doubt about it, but, when they go, it's like you flipped a switch, so backups are more important then every. A spinner will give you an idea its going most of the time.

Enjoy the speed :-)

I have a diy ssd mirrored win2012E and backed up to a 1 tb red spinner. It has 2 4tb reds for data and an external 5 bay usb 3 with 5 2tb dives. It is all being tested.

I run 2 x-510 main with reds and sync to the other.

10 years from now we will look back and wonder how we every used spinners :-)

Good luck

If anyone runs across those 2 x 2,5" Enclosures which support RAID 0,1 and JBOD I certainly would love to get another one. I have one running in an EX485 running WHS2011 now for oh man a year maybe two now and its running 24-7. Very happy with it for sure.

I emailed Icydock about the dual 2.5 drive adapter, they said they were working on a model that was faster bus speed. So keep an eye out for them. I will be.
Good luck

That would be very cool. I did pick up a few of their 3.5" converts so I could install 2.5" SSD's in a 3.5" Bay mostly to play around with in MSS Enclosures. I am debating changing over that EX485 over to an SSD from that RAID1 configuration I have in it now and I have an EX49x that I want to setup with WHS2011 as well but its all for media streaming online just to show it can be done for those interested.
