I had two failed disks in my X510 and when replacing all four of them I took the oppertunity to upgrade to WHS2011. In the same time I installed a disk monitor software that indicated that two of the new disks were running hot.

My first thought was that one or all fans had failed and I installed a fan control software. I saw that one fan was working but only rotating with ~800 RPM. After changing it to ~2000 RPM all disks are now cool.

I don't know if this was the reason why my old disks failed or if WHS2011 made the fan spin slower than WHS1. One reason could of course be that one or more fans actually have failed. That's why I wonder how many fans there are in X510? If there are more than one I need to investigate further. Anyone know?

There are two case fans in the back of the Data Vault, it is effectively identical to the MediaSmart Server so this guide will help you if you decide you'd like to inspect or replace the fans.

The fan speeds are controlled in the BIOS and the speed is based off of CPU temperature.

You will cook your drives with WHS 2011 unless you do one of two things:

1) Use a debug board to access the BIOS and change the fan speeds
2) Bend the speed control pin on the connector for the fans and just run the fans at high speed

I did method 2  Check out here: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=12352

I have three drives that are slowly dying and need to be replaced now

Don't fry your drives! Either mod the power connector (takes 5 minutes tops) or use a debug cable to get to the BIOS.
