Hi there

It appears my PSU has failed after over 10 years of use in a EX490.

Looking for opinions of reliability and performance of brands of replacement PSU's that have been used that have been direct replacements for these particular units. Two that I've found through this site and others are Overtek and KDM and have it confirmed that they had PSUs that could simply be plugged in and fit.

But I am concerned with reports of longer term use of these PSUs. For something on 24/7 in my residence, a bit more input 'always' appreciated.

Thanks

Well there are several pinouts needed to check because there are multiple 5volt and 12 volt outputs. When testing
But it could be the current drags it down.
Here is the one I bought for my ex490 last year. 02/22/2019
https://www.ebay.com/itm/331384145452?V ... 1384145452
Plug and play no adapters needed.
If I were you while you have it apart I would replace the coin battery on the motherboard as well , I think it is a cr2032
Currently several people have posted with issues and it was the date was off due to a dead battery

And I have always had my ex490 on 24/7

Hi there

Yeah, that CR2032 was replaced as I was checking things out . . .

I had a couple issues with odd poweroffs the past couple months despite being hooked up to an APC UPS 1500 the past 8 or 9 years. Hitting the power button would spark it back to life, but this last time no dice. Some faint lighting of the status icons, very brief (sub second) spin of the PSU fan, then nothing. Checked PINS 1 & 2 and it has 5V, but when those pins jumpered, no activity in the PSU i.e. fan not going. So taking it then that PSU shot and if I purchase a new one and find it 'was' something more as well, oh well . . .

That KDM is one that I was eyeballing. But the uncertainty of brand reliability - and more so 'safety', has me on edge a bit.

Thanks

Well as I stated mine is still fine after a year and it is rated for 100,000 hours at 75c.
Also as spin drives age they start to draw more current that6 stresses the PSU.
Myself it started that it would not boot unless I pulled one drive out.
Then it dies just like yours.
every thing matches up and really a power supply today is pretty much generic except for the cable pin out for the hp server.
There are other companies out there that sell them with a cable gender changer to match but good luck stuffing it in the case.
And when I bought mine last year it was $46.00 so they probably will increase more in price or become non existent the next few years.

PSU is the MSS most common failure point. The one on my 47x only lasted 4 years. The PSU in the intel based MSS is a lot better. The rest of the hardware rarely fails.

Both aftermarket PSU's you mentioned have good reputations. But Ruben is right, as a long term user you should expect stuff to become discontinued. I'm still super impressed with the MSS and keep enough spares around to keep it running for at least the next 5-10 years.

Thanks man. I have a replacement PSU coming through Overtek. If as I suspect that does the trick, I'll even order a second . . .
