Hello,

I love my new H340 server! However one thing I don't care for is the folder copy option you have for safeguarding your info on another harddrive. Has anyone had the idea of installing a PCIe x1 RAID card and having a TRUE RAID setup? It should be transparent to the OS providing they are drivers for the OS, right?

All the best,
Aaron Lephart

There are many, many posts here about this topic... So far, one of the more interesting thoughts I have seen on this is that RAID is designed for uptime, not as a home environments best practice for critical data safety...

Digging up an old post as this entire board is kinda dead...
One thing that was disappointing to me is that the Intel SATA chipset SHOULD be able to support basic RAID functionality, but there's nowhere to enable it in the BIOS. I opted to go with a software RAID in Ubuntu, with /boot sitting outside of the RAID on the embedded 256MB flash drive (there's a jumper on the motherboard that makes the first boot device be the embedded USB drive). I was looking at other possibilities, such as a PCIe x1 or x4 RAID controller.... but that would require me to rewire everything (including severely hacking the front HD LEDs), so I opted not to do that. Eventually I want to run the entire OS off of a USB flash drive with the exception of /boot, which would still be on the embedded flash drive.

Another option for Linux is to make

/dev/sd[abcd]1 a RAID1 (md0) with 4 partitions of 3 GB each for the system's root filesystem (including '/boot')
/dev/sd[abcd]2 a RAID1 (md1) with 4 partitions of 1 GB each for swap
/dev/sd[abcd]3 a RAID5 (md2) with 4 partitions of X TB each for /data

Install Grub to /dev/sd[abdc] (every disk!) and you're set.

Code:
demtestdingens:~# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4]
md1 : active raid5 sda1[0] sdd2[3] sdc2[2] sdb1[1]
      2929677312 blocks level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU]
      bitmap: 0/8 pages [0KB], 65536KB chunk

md0 : active raid1 sdc1[0] sdd1[1]
      19534912 blocks [2/2] [UU]
      bitmap: 0/1 pages [0KB], 65536KB chunk

unused devices: <none>

I tried also to use the RAID-Feature of included IHC7-Chipset, but the BIOS-Options of this are scribbled away, so no chance. Also it does only support RAID0 and 1. Furthermore it has no own intelligence, it relyas on the main CPU, as softraid does.
From the specs, there seems to be another possibility: the onboard Marvell 88SE6121, which is connected to the external SATA-Interface. Because I lack an external enclosure, I couldn't test it in any way.

FYI: To use an old LTO2-tape drive, I fitted an LSI53C1020A PCIx-Controller in the slot, and it runs nicely.
