Yet another followup:

I discovered a nifty tool call EasyBCD that (together with the WNAS.SYS discovery) let me install both grub & plop on the on-board flash.... and neither of those were able to boot freeNAS from a USB thumb drive...

So I think that's the final nail in the coffin for trying to get it going off of USB media -- it's always at least booted off of the first drive bay, but I was unwilling to give that up while USB boot appeared to be (the preferred) possibility.

Recently upgraded to just released Freenas 8.0.1 and this one also works just fine. Still using UFS mode, as ZFS requires 6GB (actually 8GB) to function at expected speeds and so far I don't see the need for ZFS and such required memory upgrade.

My system (EX490) changes:
- uProc update: Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5400 2,7Ghz
- added HD's: 2x Western Digital Caviar Green WD15EADS. 1.5TB
- Gen3 cable: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8066 residing in upper drive bay and with jumper installed on motherboard (VGA, Keyboard, Mouse and BIOS access all working).
- 4GB USB stick with Freenas 8.0.1 (plugged in at the front side).

Running the 2x 1.5TB disks in RAID config and accessible via CIFS (Samba). Currently I'm trying to get the original disk up and running as AFP share to use it as Apple TimeMachine disk, but this somehow doesn't work yet ... user privileges issues or something...

any more luck with this? (hp ex470)
first off i have no luck installing the freenas 9.3 iso directly to a usb (unetbootin, yumi, win32diskimager, nothing) to boot, in any pc, i have to burn it to a cd and utilize it that way. is this a known bug? so i burn the iso to a cd, boot from it in a third party pc, install it to my usb (32gb), and then put the usb in the hpmediasmart only to have it freeze up, and disable my ps2 keyboard.
is the hpmediasmart 64bit?

thanks for all your input.
