Erail and Comp1962 I believe we have Identical backplanes...

I noticed there is a port on the back for what looks like a fan plug in. Since Im not quite to the power stage, I was wondering if you guys knew what it was for? If it is for fan can I wire in dual fans off of that?

Yes, the port in the back is for a fan(2-wire). What I don't know is whether it can handle 2 fans, there is a second fan port with no connector on it. I went with just using the 12 volt molex for powering both fans but you may want to try using the connector or taping off the 2nd connector for the second fan. Another reason I went with the molex is I could modify the molex to give me 7 volt or 5 volt for the fans if they were too loud but it's proved not neccessary.

I never bothered with that small fan header connection I just connected the fans using the PSU leads. I did install connectors so that if I ever dissassembled the unit I could just unplug the fans. As a matter of fact I can remove the back panel and unplug every connector there which makes future servicing much easier.

Damn if I knew you were going to go that route I would of mentioned getting an entire enclosure which recently showed up on Newegg for like $75 with free delivery unless you can get them to swap the backplane then thats cool too.

Ok Backplane is now wired in, Need to work on switch and fans next.

Lessons learned:

figure out all parts needed first and then order all parts needed together as shipping is a bear. I wents a little diffrent route then Comp1962 so I tried to do thinks a little diffrent then his parts list. Epic Fail!! You absolutely can not count on your local stores (Like Frys) having everything you need.

Here are the things I needed frys didnt have:

90 degree M/F SATA Connector (Microcenter P/N: SATA-90MF) the original part I used was OSA25 also purchased at Microcenter. You may be able to find a 90 degree Female to eSATA to eliminate multiple connections. - Didnt think Id need this as my support structure was diffrent.

90 degree Molex Connection prewired cable (Can be purchased at most computer suppliers) - essential unless your have a great computer supply store local.

A Dremel - Another essential Piece of hardware cause you will have to cut or debur something in this project.

Soldering Iron - Frys didnt have the solder I needed but had this with the solder I needed in the package. Way more cost effective then buying seperate.

I want to know when radioshack became so lame. I went there for a few items and both stores in my town where basically cellphone resellers. I was like do you have a store more geared to selling electronic components and less towards cellphones? the sales person looked confused. This might not be the case for everyone the radioshack in the town I use to live in was exactly the store I needed but was 800 miles away. Another thing thats annoying is most stores rely on their website for parts look ups (Lame) and ordering but have the worst search engine ever (Frys)!!

Its good your getting close to completing your project. I hope when you turn it on and test it out that it works out well for you. Just make certain that you press in the eSATA Cable abit firm if you located it where I did as the plastic case on the MSS may cause some interfearance but you will see when you first make the connection and realize its more firm then other eSATA connections which I like very much.

I tend to be fortunate in that I have many computer stores in the Greater Atlanta Area. Frys use to be an awesome place to get components but their shelfs tend to get cluttered like Microcenter but those two stores are close together but still 60 miles away from me. There are a ton of Asian owned Computer stores in the area too but they sell used computers and misc components but often come in handy. Radio Shack is not what it use to be but they often have something that gets me out of trouble. For the most part I will only stop in a Radio Shack if I an near one and browse for things I might need.

Since my Esata box is down and this project is stalled for a while, awaiting my new board. I was wondering if I can use this in the mean time:

http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.a ... 46&ID=1895

i can hook it up esata, I just want to avoid throwing errors or damaging my data.

You could use one of the those but I would also recommend you place a small fan next to it to blow air over the drives to keep them cool.

I have one of those units and oddly enough I use one of the MSS PortMultipliers as a docking station of sorts these days but from time to time I still use the docking station.

With eSATA you can connect and access 2 drives but with USB only 1 drive can be used unless they have made changes since I aquired mine about 2 years ago maybe even longer.

No drive order is not important. The only thing important is for WHS to see the drives. Any importance for drive location would be for your bennifit to be able to identify a particular drive but if you use Disk Management and create a Wireframe it takes the brain work out of that too.

So with the help of my dad I got enclosure all wired up and back together. Hurray!!!

Plugged it in and neither the MSS or my laptop can see the new enclosure. took the whole thing apart and put it back together got drive to slide in and lock a little easier. still wont see drives!!! DRAG!!!

Did some looking and Im thinking now there is some wrong with power supply. It only barely makes fans spin and will power lights. The Power supply fan wont spin at all. Looking at prices on ebay for new supply its only a little cheaper then getting an new 5 bay esata enclosure. Im thinking about calling this quits and moving on. if anyone is interested ill be willing to sell this unit and the 4 bay sata unit I parted out and maybe the 4 MSS drive caddies I have.

Thats bummer. You should be able to find a suitable PSU for $50 or less. Some Shuttle PSU's will fit nicely in the MSS other mITX PSU's can be fitted in but you would need to remove the PSU Cage which holds the motherboard in your unit but you do not need to spend a lot of money to get a decent PSU to do the job.

I would encourage you to let the unit sit for a while and then when things settle to take another look at the project. I have done 2 of these and have one attached to my desktop sitting there for when I need to work on drives. It sort of replaced my docking station which I still have attached to the same desktop but for anything that I know will take a bit of time I use the MSS Port Multiplier to do the job since it keeps the drive(s) nice and cool. The other one I have is not in use but I dedicated it to my new server Highlander so I could test out the motherboards eSATA ports to see if they were Port Multiplier aware and they are so I left it there to always remind me of my humble WHS MSS beginnings.

Enough rambling about what I am doing with mine I just want to encourage you to keep the faith, push forward and complete the task at hand. After all its many who can say they have one of these very unique things and you are very close. Besides they do look very cool sitting next to an existing MSS running side by side. Nothing better than matching units. I just wish HP made a 4 or 5 bay unit like that 2 bay unit they did make.

My motherboard for my EX49x is toast, so I decided that while I wait for some cash to buy a replacement, I started converting my MediaSmart Server into a PM, here's some photos. I'm thinking of using the addonics 5 in 1 esata interface. Maybe I'll hide a 5th drive in the bottom of the case and have the PSU external. Might be hard to find a backplate if I choose to go that way since I can't wire up the existing MediaSmart Server back plate because of the edge connector. The case is about 4 " shorter than the original since I removed space for the motherboard.

Diehard you will need to measure the distance between the backplane connections. For some reason the 5 port backplanes tend to space the connectors abit further apart. I hape yours match up and that your project is successfull so Good Luck and I certainly look forward to your progress in the project. Sorry to hear about your motherboad.
