Hello folks,

I'm getting a set in of early Friday brain shut down... The MSS machines offer hot swapable drives, exept for Bay 0 correct?

Which means that adding drives or removing them can be done while the box is up...

However, I would personally prefer to do it while it has been shut down. Would there be anything wrong with shutting down the MSS before doing this or would it not reflect things correctly.

I'm really interested in adding... But any notes on bad drive replacements would also be useful....

Additionally to note if I had a bad HDD I would go to the console, ask it to remove the bad HDD (Say Bay 1-3) and ask it to remove it from the farm first. And then instanciate a System shut down.

OR adding a drive in I would shut it down, add the drive in, power it back up and then as the console to add it to the farm.

Am I thinking logical with my process since I would prefer to do changes while there is no electrical current. Or is there something in the MSS which would not like this process.

Your feedback on my forgetful moment would be much appreciated!

Yes you can do it like you mentioned.

But you can also do it while the system is running. You just remove the drive from your pool then once its done then you can pull it out.

Drives are hot swappable, period. There is no reason to shut down the MSS to change drives. I've inserted and removed various HDDs many times. :8

There also would be no problems with your proposed course of action, so feel free to power off the server if that makes you feel better. :)

For addiing additional drives, does a person want to get a SATA or a SATA II drive, or doesn't it matter?

If I had the option I would go with SATAII, it's simply faster :D
