How many of you have a battery backup on your WHS? I am thinking of getting one for power outages so it can shutdown properly. If you do what kind do you have.. I have been looking at this one :

It is highly recomended to use a UPS backup with your MSS.
The #1 reason for the MSS is to protect your data & a hard shutdown during a backup or drive balance could damage your important data.

Used in combination with the Grid Junction add-in and it's even better.

Most APC's work with the Grid Junction add-in.
Ask or check the list of UPS's that are known to work with grid before purchasing & do not install the managment software that comes with it. ( Thats what Grid Junction is for)

Great suggestion for a really useful add-in.

Am I reading it all correctly that I need a UPS that has a USB port that must be connected to the MSS? Or will a UPS with a network connector connected to my network work also?

as far as I know, the UPS connects to the MSS via USB.

Someone should jump on here shortly and verify this.

I have an APC UPS connected to mine. It connects from the APC's data port to the USB port on my WHS using the cable that came with the UPS.

I can't comment on the network connection; I haven't seen a UPS with a network connector. I looked a few up from APC and TrippLite, including top end units, and they all have the data port (which is a special cable that converts to USB) or a standard USB or serial port.

I use an APC UPS (have shifted several different ones around) with the Grid Junction software.

Hello, all --

I have an APC SmartUPS1400XL with the environmental sensing/network management card (AP9619) that I'm recycling from another project and I'd like to use it with my EX470.

I know that the management board can shut down other computers which are running the PowerChute network shutdown client by sending a shutdown message over the network. Has anyone tried this setup on WHS rather than Grid Junction + a USB UPS? Before I give this a try I thought I'd ask and see if it's been done before.

Thanks!

Regards,
Rich

I think it needs to be connected directly to the MSS via USB for the MSS to "see" it. Unless a UPS that connects to the network has a utility that can be installed on the MSS...but I'm not aware of one. Then again, I never looked for one. I've always gone with APC UPSes and they come with the little cables that have an RJ-45 connector on the UPS end and a USB connector on the computer end.

The UPS has been a godsend. In the handful of power outages we've had in the last two years, it's kept the server (and 6 x USB HDDs) up and running for the short outages (15 minutes or less) and allowed a graceful system shutdown for longer ones.

Thanks. I guess my thought was that the APC PowerChute client is a Windows service that receives shutdown messages from the APC management board. You give the UPS a list of IP addresses and during a power event, it remotely shuts down the computers in the notifications list. I had it running on my Windows servers before I downsized my home installation and re-engineered how I store and access my files.

Before I tried to install it I thought I'd ask if anyone had any success with this approach.

Regards,
Rich

Only once did I connect a network cable to pass through a UPS the only issue was it reduced the gigabit connection from 1000 to 10/100 so I chose not to use the network protection. This was on a CyberLink UPS. I am however going back to APC when I purchase some newer units which will be much larger than what I am using now.

As for using a single UPS to control shutting down other units. The only thing I can think of for that being of use if is you had more than one unit connected to a rather large UPS. I do not share UPS's, each unit I have has its own UPS can each UPS controls the shut down of what its protecting.

The one thing most over look is changing out the batteries after a certain period of time. The batteries do not last forever and do need to be changed from time to time. Some of my UPS's will issue a battery alarm.
