First I wanted to say that readin gthrough the posts has been very informative but it has left me with a question regarding upgrading the primary drive.

I have read many, many posts with individuals upgrading the 500GB drive that is shipped with the unit to a TB drive and then adding more drives.
I have also read that MSS will copy the data placed on the server to the other drives in the pool leaving only pointers on the primary drive.
If this is true and pointers are really really small would upgrading the primary drive not be a waste of money? Would it make more sense to leave the 500GB drive intact and add TB drives to the unit.
I am asking as I was thinking about making the upgrade to the primary drive myself and throwing the 500GB into my DNS-323

Quick review of the MSS..
Has to be the simplest piece of software to manage that MS has ever written, the Windows team should take note.

Upgrading the main drive is really only useful for file duplication or when your other drives are full.

I left my main drive at 500gb.

There is no imperative need to do so, unless you regularly copy very large files/groups of files to the server. In this case, WHS may still be migrating the data off the primary drive while you're attempting to copy more data, resulting in a "disk full" message. 500GB is definitely sufficient for almost all users, many people just like to tinker with the system. :)

I'd imagine as a speed freak you'd want the fastest & most reliable drive as your primary, it does house the MSS system files in the 20GB partition and it apparently is the landing pad for all incoming files. When will they come out with 1TB SolidState drives. Come on technology, catch up! ;-P
