Hi All,

My EX470 has slowly become unreliable. For the first years it was rock-solid and stable. Now, not so much. It's gotten to the point where it loses contact with the network and needs to be restarted every couple of days.

In an attempt to fix it, I did a 'Server Recovery' on it, which went fine. But now, the software fails when I try and set it back up. I've done 3 Server recoveries, same result every time. So in a last ditch effort, I've decided to try a 'Factory Reset"...but I do not want to lose my Data!

What are my options for keeping my data? I plan to pull all drives except the system drive and then do the reset. After that, can I mount the drives on another PC and copy the data back on?

Hi Mach1,

I did a similar procedure when my EX470 went down (it was just dirty, which I was then not aware of). So, since the MSS was down, I bought a N40L and transfered the data to it (WHS2011) through another PC. It worked, but was a nightmare with the duplicated data spread over all drives. In fact, when shares are duplicated, the original and mirrored data can be anywhere on the other drives (thanks to DE  ). So you have to look everywhere to be sure you have all data copied back.

If it is possible to turn duplication off, it would help, if not, be sure to have spare time for that endeavour.

Oh! and yes, the data is hidden, you have to turn on "show hidden files".

Good luck

Thanks guys that helps. I have since decided to dump the EX470. It was a hard decision, but it is a necessary step. I have stopped all attempts to revive the EX470, so that my data remains safe. I do have a drive designated for backup in the server, so I think I'm okay. I have 1.67 TB of movies that are not duplicated, so I should be able to get them back.

I have decided to build myself a 2011 WHS and recycle the drives and Sans Digital eSATA tower from the EX470. I will post my build when it happens.
