Does anyone know (or find out) what the on-board SMI USB partition is called? I have now got the files for this partition, however, it is still not booting from that partition, when doing a server re-install. According to Linux, the partition IS boot-able. Thanks in advance.

Its name is something like USB SMI but the name is not important because it just contains a version of WinPE which is bootable and your server boots off that partition when it can not find a bootable device in the bottom Drive Bay or bottom rear USB Port. The other way the USB SMI boots is when you activate it by pressing the Status Reset Button during the startup process when the health light blinks a certain blink code.

Personally I stopped pressing the Status/Rest Button as I found backing out the system drive then turning the server on and when the health light blinks purple/red I seat the system drive and then run the recovery software on a client. This works extremely well.

This is for the EX47x and the EX48x works in a similar way but the health light blinks a different blink code for its recovery. I believe the LX series is similar but with the hard drive buried inside the unit its more of a challenge.
