While I am not up to speed in the world of Linux I do not recall others who have installed it on there MSS reporting issues but I could be wrong. If you have taken your server apart in the past you may want to examine the actual backplane for damage as some have actually broken off Capacitor(s) during the insertion or extraction of the backplane.

Your backplane should look like the pic below:

I wish I could answer that but I do know if you search through the forums you will find some users have posted about their experience with installing Linux on their MSS and the issues they had to over come. I wish I could be more help but its been quite sometime since I played with Linux and never really made any attempt to install it on an MSS.

I don't think so, also there is zero logic on the backplane just the aluminum caps and surface mount resistors/caps. Can you see the 2 drives in question on another system?

all my drives work on both my laptop and desktop, even tried formating the drives so that it looks "new" when inserting in to mediasmart.

Hey emilc, did you make any further progress with this? I'm trying to get unRAID to run on my ex470 and I'm having a similar problem. unRAID only sees drives in bay 1 & bay 3. But, I can't go back to WHS because I can't get the server restore disc to "find" my server. That's the main reason I'm trying to get unRAID to work. I'm thinking about shopping for a dead ex470 that I can buy for parts but at the moment there aren't any on ebay. I'm hoping it turns out to be a software issue.

In the mean time I've got my extra drives in an eSATA expansion chassis.

Please let me know if you've had any success.

Are there any updates on this? I'm trying to install unRAID on an ex475 and it as well only sees bays 1 and 3. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

My machine just suddenly started exhibiting this same behavior... it used to work just fine in the past, though.
Linux detects that there's SOMETHING in the bays 2 and 4, but is not able to initialize the drives correctly o_O

Ran Fedora 14 through 17 (still 17) on the machine before, worked just fine.

Tried replacing/swapping drives, tried a different motherboard.. the only thing that's left is the backplane -- but it looks intact and the multimeter says the capacitor measurements are all consistent... still, must be the backplane somehow

Only way I can think of to confirm if the backplane is actually functional or not is to pull out a small hard drive 80 GB or larger and reinstall the original OS to the EX47x then once the OS is loaded and configured simply start plugging in drives but do not add them to the storage pool or if the drive is not used on another system and you do not mind it being formatted you can format it NTFS and still not add it to the storage pool. Then you can verify if the bay is working and then pull the drive and add it to the next back until its been added to the 3 empty bays to confirm if they are working or not. If all 3 bays are working then you will know the issue is not with the backplane but may reside with the OS your running which could simply be a driver issue.

Other then that I can not think of any other way as simple as this to confirm if the hardware is functional or not and if it were me this is the approach I would take. Now if you know someone who has an MSS doesn't matter what model it is you could swap out the backplanes and test it that way.

Yeah, that's exactly what I figured.. just don't think I have the patience to set up WHS all over again xD
Maybe I'll ask in this forum if someone in Bay Area can lend me their backplane for a quick test

But longterm, I've started looking at the other servers.. N54L sounds not bad at all (especially if/when it goes on sale for $220~ish on Newegg)

That would make sense but if you did want to sell your EX470 you would really want to determine that its fully functional. Personally I would opt to just build something to better meet my needs allowing for some growth plus you benefit from longer component warranties and not get locked into proprietary components.
