I am going to upgrade my ex470 hopefully this weekend...maybe next week and was looking for some thoughts on it.

1. I bought 4 GB RAM to add to it from a post here (after i read that 4GB over 2GB would only give me like a 2% increase...Oh well.
2. I purchased an Intel 5200 processor
3. Currently have 2 1.5TB drives that I will put in it. (getting rid of 2 500GB drives. 1 was the original it came with and 1 was added later).

I am not worried about changing the RAM out, that is easy http://www.myhomeserver.com/?page_id=10.
I can't find a post or guide that walks through changing the processor so I was hoping someone would know of one.
I also read that I will need to flash the BIOS, something I have never done so I hope this post viewtopic.php?p=10271#p10271 will help.

Finally install WHS 2011 on it. Never done, but not too worried because this article seems pretty well written http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/04 ... rt-server/

I guess I am just looking for a little bit of encouragement. Never done something like this. I know computers pretty well but this is pushing what I have done before and can do to the limit. Any words of wisdom you can give?

Also, what plug-ins should I look into installing? I heard there is one that controls the fans a little better to help keep the upgraded processor cooler. I saw that there was a WordPress Plug-in, I am very interested in that since I do a lot of WP development. I am thinking of cataloging my movies with My Movies http://www.mymovies.dk so that when I stream to my XBOX 360, they are better organized and presented. Should I do that or just stick with the Media Center app on the XBOX 360? What about 3rd party drive extender? I heard someone had one. Any other plug-ins I should really consider?

You aren't going to get very far on this, since the EX470 is an AMD processor unit and you bought an Intel processor.

did they switch the processors to Intel ones later in the series? Did both the 470 and 475 have AMD?

What AMD processor should I be using then?

HP used AMD hardware in the EX47x series; the EX48x and EX49x use Intel hardware. I have an EX487 and EX490 so they both take Intel processors, but since I don't have an EX47x I can't say for sure which AMD processor(s) will work. My recommendation would be to poke around the forums here and see what others are running.

I'll give you one hint, though. ;)

erail, who replied to your post, has an EX470 featured in his signature...he's got a 4200+ EE processor in his. I believe that to be the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Energy Efficient 2.2 GHz, but you should check with him to be sure. If you bought the E5200 new and haven't opened it, you should be able to return it without fuss. If you bought a used one off of eBay, you should be able to resell it without too much trouble. I've sold lots of processors on eBay, and if it's 64-bit and at least a dual core (the E5200 is), it should sell.

Ok, well I stopped shipment of the Intel. Now I guess I need to try to find an AMD processor. Feeling like I am in over my head now seeing all these processors listed and not being able to find the exact same one.

BE-2300 is a good option but it is 45w version. which tend to heat up alot. the models that work welll with EX47x are the ADD models that has 35w power and they dont heat up that much, but these are very hard to find

on ebay i see: http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Athlon-64-3 ... 3370acba95

and http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Sempron-64- ... 3369f5e21f

couple of them that are ADD models.. should work fine. and they have 30 days return that can help if processor does work as expected.

UPDATE: sorry didnt realize that this processor (that i posted link of) is single core.. no good if you plan to install WHS2011 later on.
