I managed to score an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ - 2 GHz Dual-Core (ADD3800IAA5CU) off of Ebay this weekend. I've already modifed the BIOS and I'll drop in the new CPU when it arrives. QUESTION: What do I have to do Windows to let it know I have a Dual-Core CPU? I've seen a few people talk about changing settings in Device Manager, but I can't seem to find anything on what exactly I have to change. Any pointers of step-by-steps would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Eric

I have upgraded to X2 processors in 2 EX470's and all I do not recall having to do anything other than the BIOS Mod. You may want to install Alexes Fan Control ADD-IN to help keep the processor cool. If your removing the original processor keep in mind the heat sink compound HP used is like superglue and if your too agressive with it then it will pull the processor out of the socket even with the lock in place. Since you acquired a rare processor be certain to use a high quality heat sink compound when installing it.

Somehow I was under the impression that I had to change settings in Windows for it to recognize the new processor. I'll drop the new processor in place and see what happens.

I've already installed Alex's Fan Controll add-in and I replaced the stock CPU a while back with a 2.6GHz AMD LE-1640 Orleans processor, so no worries on the glue... :)

I'll let you know how things turn-out. The next thing I want to do is upgrade the server storage and try to grow my C: drive partition. I'm tired of the out-of-space errors that the log files cause... :)

Thanks for the help!

Eric

Please pardon my ignorance, but what is a Neo 6550e 35w?

It's a newer athlon dual core, lower wattage so it doesn't run so hot. The Neo 6550e runs at a respectable 2.2ghz. Any CPU upgrades for the Ex47x model should ideally have a Thermal rating of 45w or less otherwise they run too hot and cause system errors/shutdowns. Application of thermal paste is important too.

Console is now responsive and system temps are nice and low...

Is it easy to find? What does the cost look like?

Thanks!

In Task Manager you'll need to click on View, then CPU History, then One Graph Per CPU. This is just so that YOU see each core. Windows sees it as soon as it starts up.
