I give it less than 6 months until they write off the entire endeavor of the mediasmart server. Which will not turn out to be HPs Newton in 10 years.

I'm not sure I understand your post. HP discontinued Mediasmart Servers with the rollout of WHS 2011. There won't be any additional patches or updates from HP. The question I have is: What are the chances HP reverses course and rolls out a new MSS that supports a newer version of WHS down the road?

HP may not have the MediaSmart line anymore, but the Proliant Microservers are a great alternative, and they support WHS2011.

Okay I have a question on this issue.
Using a ex-490
What if:
Say a cooling fan dies or some other component such as a power supply.
Or I use a recovery and I need to get to patch 3+.
Am I going to have issues in the near future?

Hardware is warrantied for 1 year, except the X510 Data Vault which is warrantied for 3 years. We already know how to replace the power supply (see the Wiki) though it requires rewiring due to an atypical pinout. I expect software to be available for download for a while.
