I seem to recall that 2.0tb was the max limit on drive size for the 470 series but can't find any validation. Is that correct? I have a 2.5tb drive and want to use it in the 470. Do I need to partition it as a 2.0tb drive or will the server not accept in because of the way drives are added to the pool? Thanks.

The limitation is 2 TB so you will need to run the drive with 2 partitions. The only positive side is that you can have a full 2TB Partition rather than the 1800+ GB partition you get with 2TB Drives so you will get to use a good portion of the drive and still benifit from the added capacity for a full 2 TB Partition if you split it up that way.

Just so I am clear. I can partition the drive in any increment of 2.0tb and below, put into the server and the server will only reformat what ever sub 2.0tb partitions I have? It will not repartition the drive? BTW, thanks for the reply.

Yes the server will indeed reformat the drive and adjust the partition to the largest size it can handle. The limitation is 2TB so you should get the full 2TB. The limitation is not an EX470 limitation but one for MS and the OS. So pop the drive in and see what you get out of it.

There is information alos on the site about utilizing the entire drive but when you add it to your storage pool WHS will follow the 2 TB limitation. This is the primary reason why I have not opted to buy a higher capacity drive.

I just purchased a 3Tb drive and now find out it wont work on my 470. But in your post, you mention it is not possible with WHS, but is it possible with WHS 2011? I have already upgraded my Ram, so I am good to install if I can.

Both WHS v1 and WH2011 are limited to 2 TB but there is a workaround to getting the full use of larger drives but I have yet to play with it so I would urge you to search that out in the forums where I know its been discussed.

Having said that you can split the drive up into multiple partitions and still get use out of the drive. I have yet to purchase the larger drives but am contemplating larger drives for a new server build I am contemplating. I like many others have large servers and more than on so the larger drive sizes are of interest to me but not much of an interest for my current servers because I want something that natively supports the larger drives as I have no interest to tweak around the OS Limitations.
