My Mediasmart 475 is now showing the network health light red. The warnings in the console say

The HP Mediasmart Server CPU is running too hot

and

The HP Mediasmart Server fans are not running at proper speeds.

But when I go to the Hardware status both fans are reported as running at about 1400 rpm (varying slightly with time) and the CPU temperature of ~35C. All of which looks pretty normal to me.

I have rebooted the server but the error message persists. The server is generally only on for about an hour a day doing backups - rest of the time it hibernates controlled by LightsOut. It has 3 500GB hard drives and upgraded to 2 GB of memory (a long time ago). Has been running perfectly up until now and I have changed nothing.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Philip

I recommend you download and install Alex's Fan Speed Control available from the ADD-INS TAB on this site. This will will allow you to adjust the fan speeds to help keep your CPU Temp down which helps during heavy CPU Activity on the EX47x MSS.

Its not clear if you have upgraded the CPU or which version of the HP Software your running as these things also have an effect on the CPU. What you can do is RDP to your servers desktop and check the CPU load to see if anything is putting a heavy load on your CPU then you work towards correcting the issue at hand.

If your CPU does get too hot your server will shut down for its own protection. In this case the best thing to do while troubleshooting would be to place a small 4" household fan infront of the server with the server door open to blow are into the server to help keep things cool until you can determine whats going on. Once the issue is resolved the household fan will not be required but I can tell you it works.

Let me know how you make out and if you require additional help.

Could be a corrupt .ini file, see here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3333&start=0

Yes -corrupt ini file was the answer. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The only problem I had was, at first, I couldn't rename or delete the ini file as it said it was in use. Uninstalling PerfectDisk cured the problem which makes me wonder if Perfect Disk caused the problem in the first place. I think I won't reinstall it as I am not sure it is necessary anyway.

This forum is great - thanks for the help. I wouldn't have figured that out on my own.
