I have a EX475 that has only original parts/sw. I have made my own VGA and PS2 cable which was fairly easy thanks to all the excellent contributors on this site.

I would like to upgrade my EX475 with 2GB Ram and a new CPU to be able to use as my home media server, but most of the CPUs mentioned in the upgrade guides are no longer available in the shops. I have a newer AMD CPU on my hands but it is the Athlon X2 7550 and I'm not sure if this would be compatible with the motherboard even with all kinds of BIOS tricks. I now that the 7550 uses the AM2+ socket which is compatible with AM2 but unsure if all the rest will work out (The AMD part no is: AD7550WCJ2BGH)

Does anyone of you guys have the overview of the AMD CPU product line over the last few years and would you be able to tell me if this could work?!?!?

I would appreciate any comment or opinion.

/David

Hi c957031 Welcome to the forums \:D/

According to the link below the processor you are asking about is a 95w processor. If this is true then unfortunately you will not be able to use it with your EX475.

http://www.cpu-world.com/cgi-bin/Identi ... PROCESS=Go

If you look around you should be able to find AMD BE2300's. I have already started to order components for a new WHS2011 Build so when the test server is offline I will be willing to sell the BE2300 in that unit but I also have a new one sitting on the shelf as a backup to support the test server and an EX470 running the HP 3.0 software. I mention this because I may also be sending out the EX470 with the 3.0 to my GF unless she choses the other EX470 running 1.3. So at that point I will no longer require the BE2300 even tho I currently own 3 EX470's. Anything I chose to use those for can use the stock processor as they would only run website links or FTP.

So by all means keep looking andif your not successful then remember I should have a BE2300 available very soon be it new or used to sell.

Since people have been reporting success with the Athlon Neo X2 6850e (ADJ6850IAA5DO, 22W, 1800MHz), why not go for this one?

Hello again,

I studied the CPU specs, and found an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (ADO4000IAA5DD) which was available near me at a reasonable price.
After the bios mods it seems to run without any problems (until now at least (==two days)) I have installed Linux on it (and disabled the annoying WHS sw) and until now only checked temperature with an external thermometer (normal operation 40*C (104F), max 51*C (122F)). I didn't measure temperatures on the old sempron processor, but what have you guys experienced? Do I need extra cooling??

Do some stress testing. If it stays stable nothing is needed.

If it doesn't stay stable I'd look for another CPU with a lower TDP.
