FYI:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WNAS]
"POLLING_INTERVAL"=dword:00000003
"CURRENT_STAGE"=dword:00000001
"WARNING_EVENTLOG"=dword:00000001
"CRITICAL_EVENTLOG"=dword:00000001
"FWP_MODE"=dword:00000001

POLLING_INTERVAL = Time in seconds sensors are read.
CURRENT_STAGE if set to 1 then current values of sensors and fan PWM level are shown in keys under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WNAS\Current]
WARNING_EVENTLOG If 1 then WNAS driver/service logs warnings to event log in System (HP software logs to Application).
CRITICAL_EVENTLOG If 1 then WNAS driver/service logs critical errors to event log in System
FWP_MODE If 1 then mobo flash is masked in windows. If 0 then it will be seen as a drive.

After changing a setting with regedit then disable/enable "HP MediaSmart Server" in Device Manager. If you have HP software running (I don't) then you probably will have to stop the Disk and Health monitor services before disabling device.

I installed WHS 2011 on EasyStore H340 and I was wondering why there was a small drive about 235Mo showing in the hard drive tab. That explains everything now. Since there is nothing in the registry about the WNAS, it is like if the parameter is set to "0", then it shows up in the hard drive tab. Any way to create that key and set it to "1" to hide the drive? I already exported that WNAS registry onto my desktop. Still no lights working, but it's a beginning...

Hi Claude,

Registry entries are only created and acted upon by the Wistron Corporations hardware driver/service wnas.sys that shipped with the EX470 (and other servers that use similar Wistron hardware).

I know the driver has a harware platform ID that you pass to it so I assume same driver works on many platforms. EX470 is Platform ID = 0.

Biggest problem is how to install this 32bit driver on WHS 2011 which is 64 bit. I have dissassembled it (and its partner WNASDLLATL.DLL) enough for me to code for the EX470 but I would not like to try to rewrite it for 64bit platform.

Sorry, but I don't really understand this part. Why would you code for the EX470? It is already working with WHS v1. And if you are talking about installing WHS 2011 on the EX470, then you would need to rewrite for 64 bit platform anyway. Did I miss something?

I actually don't have any HP software on my EX470 WHS v1. Vanilla Microsoft WHSv1 installation & the WC hardware driver.

jarrods, do I understand that you have the LEDS working without the HP software package ? Just WHS v1 and the driver and the lights are working ? what if you add remove drives, do the lights blink as they should ?

What if you installed Windows 7 32bit on that server, with the driver, would the lights be on ?

thanks.

I now understand better what you mean. That is why you don't want to recompile for WHS 2011. :wink:

Would you share what you have for those that would like to run WHS 2011 on their MSS? I assume one way or the other someone is going to have to write a service that will turn the LEDs on and off. If that is written then compiling it for both 32 and 64 platforms should be a given.

The service is the easy part, it's the driver that has prohibited me from working on this.

I agree. I have a friend that develops this sort of driver but he is moving to another state and doesn't have time to look into this.

It seems to me that if the Linux guys can get a driver working we ought to be able to as well. Right now I just don't have time to devote to the research that is necessary. :(

One of the problems is that Server 2008 requires a signed driver, so in addition to developing it we'd have to get it signed as well. It may be possible to self-sign and install our cert, but I've not investigated.
