OK; I created a folder on D and copied the Wordpress 3 files straight in. Went into IIS, created a new Virtual Directory with the following settings, then went to http://hpstorage/blog and ran through the setup and all ok.

I tried again doing what you had done and got no further. But! Then I realized I was doing it inside the shares folder. Tried again by creating a folder just in D as you did and Wordpress installed almost right. It said it was already installed and it brings up one of my old sites. Much closer.
I'm pretty sure back in this thread someone had the same thing. Going back to find it.

So the way the shares are being handled may have screwed something up?

Hope I can get this other thing fixed without bugging you. Thanks again for the help.

Edit: A bit closer. I got rid of wp-config and installed again but added a prefix to tell it I was using the same database for more than one installation. That got me into the dashboard. The local address seems to be working now but still an issue with the www address.

I have my site up and running off drive D. Thank you Very much for the help Cougar! Thought I would put up a couple notes here including mistakes I made that might help others. Comments or a proofread would be great and I will try to keep this edited/updated.

Create a new folder on the root of D. (I started with one in /shares and had problems)
Download and put an unzipped fresh copy of Wordpress in your new folder
Load up IIS Manager and create a new virtual directory pointing to the new folder on D
Load IIS, expand the left pane, right click Default Website, New, Virtual Directory, give it a name or alias, (I used the
name of the new folder) browse to the new folder on d and point to it, check the run scripts box in the next screen,
and click finish. You can check the properties of the new virtual folder and confirm they match to Cougar's screenshot
a couple posts back. Cougar has application name and application pool grayed out. Mine seemed to be filled in
automatically, but that seems to be ok.
You should now be able to open both http://myserver/aliasname or http://me.homeserver.com/aliasname
Run the wordpress configuration
Note: If this is a second site with the same database, change the wp_ prefix to something new like wp2_. The first
time I used wp_2 and it wasn't happy.
You should be up and running if I haven't forgotten something.


A couple more notes if you are moving an old wordpress site to the new folder as I was.
I exported the xml using the wordpress tool. I copied the wp content folder to the new folder on D and then imported
the xml. I then installed my theme and enabled my plugins. That all went fine with a little tweaking of some links etc.
and my old site was now up and running. I have one remaining unresolved problem that I am aware of at this point.
Wordpress itself and all of my existing plugins do not seem to want to update through wordpress. I can't even delete
them. Installing new plugins seems to be fine. Possible fix would be to uninstall the old plugins prior to the export and
wp content copy and then reinstall.

Edit: The plugin problem was fixed by manually deleting the plugin folder and then installing them through wordpress.

I hope I have remembered everything.

I have 2 possibly related problems I have been unable to solve.

1)Wordpress will not do an automatic reinstall which means it probably won't do an automatic upgrade when the there is one. Not a huge deal since I can do it manually but it would still be nice. It downloads and unpacks the zip fine, but then I get the messages "could not copy files" "installation failed". The reason I was trying it out is I was hoping it might help fix problem 2.

2)I can't seem to edit the css files and templates within wordpress-appearance-editor. It opens them up fine and allows me to make changes. But the "update files" button at the bottom is grayed out. It is clickable and the screen refreshes, but any changes I've made don't happen. I am able to edit these manually through the console, so again, there is a workaround but .... :)

I am guessing these problems may be a permissions thing, but I don't know that stuff and don't want to lose security either.
Ideas?

I saw this today and thought about your Add-in: http://ios.wordpress.org/

I do have a quick question though. I use your WHS Health add-in and am wondering does the Wordpress add-in work the same way? you get the default HP or Microsoft homepage and you get choices of what you want to do.

HP Mediasmart Server Webshare
WHS Health
WordPress Blog (what ever the name is...) Something like taht

or does it go straight into the blog. If it goes straight in who can you get to the other choices?

I don't currently update the websites list with the wordpress installer. Easy enough to add manually though, you can also edit c:\inetpub\remote\websites.xml and add something like. (Find an image you want and replace my example)

Thanks Cougar!! I do have a question, Since I got my new server Ive really gotten started like I should have with my EX475. I really under utilized that server. haha!

Here are my questions:

1) what are the diffrences between Whiist and Wordpress add-in

2) if you install word press add-in is there is no need for whiist ever right?

3) you meantioned a gallery add in is that still in the works?

Wordpress is pretty powerful, and very simple to create Blogs. Mediasmartserver.net (News Section) is running on Wordpress. Whiist will allow you to create websites, and you'll need to get down and dirty with some html coding to get things outside of its standard templates done. Really they are chalk and cheese and you could use either or both.

If wordpress will server your needs (and the plugins that are around will certainly help!) then yes, you can probably forgo Whiist. Best thing to do is try each and see what you think.

I do have a working Add-In for Gallery but it's not ready for release. I've been holding off while Gallery 3 was finished and also been working on getting Health ready for Vail?Aurora so it's slipped down on my priority list.

Wordpress as installed is version 2.8.4 and it tell me that new version 3.0.4 is available.

Is it or is it not advisable to upgrade?

If I do upgrade what kind of problems would I expect?

I have an HP EX495. Have made very little, minor, changes to Wordpress.

Jim I would upgrade. Wordpress makes it easy to do from the console, and the upgrades ensure that you are running latest stuff.

Are you running any Wordpress add-ins, or stock? If there are add-ins, check to see if those are also updatable.

So Cougar dumb question. If I wanted to move a current in-production Wordpress install to D:\blog, would this workstream capture the required steps?

1). Create directory at d:\blog
2). Copy Wordpress install over to that directory
3). Create virtual directory in IIS using the screenshot that you posted for site settings
4). Delete current Wordpress install files in my C:\blog
5). Re-boot the server

Are there any tweaks inside Wordpress that need to be made, assuming that all current settings are stock? Are there any updates needed to PHP? Would I need to rerun the Wordpress setup? Anything else that I am missing?

Appreciate the confirmation before I try this...I am "testing in production" so am a little gunshy before jumping in and moving the blog site. And I understand that "My Mileage Will Vary" but wanted to see what you thought before doing this.

Sounds like the right steps, although I'd probably rename or take a copy of the folder on Step 4 (albeit use the one in c:\inetpub\wwwroot :-)) and test it works before you remove it.

Ok so it took me WAY LONGER to get to this than I planned, but this workplan worked perfectly. Now my blog is hosted on the D drive.
