Thanks,

Any ideas as to where I should start looking for the cause of this problem?

IIS. On the server in an RDP session, first open IE and try and connect to http://localhost
if that fails, look in IIS and make sure the web sites are started

The whs website is started but can't be accessed via IE. if I right click browse in IIS I can see the home page. If I specify the port number, in this case 55000 I can see the page.

What about the default website? Are the ports still set to 80 and 443?

Yes ports set to 80 and 443. I get error 400 if I try http://localhost/ or with the addition of :80 port number

What have you done in IIS previously? You can try and restore to a previous point in IIS if it worked recently.

I am afraid I am guilty of trying anything that comes to mind or after searching the internet so I can't remeber it all. I'm sorry that's probably not much help. I am seriously considering reinstalling the OS and start afresh. Anyway if it can be resurrected it would save me that stress at least. I have been spending may hours over the past week and half trying to getting to work

You can try the IIS restore. Failing that, the Server Recovery is probably easiest to get to a working state.

1.In IIS Manager, right-click the local computer, point to All Tasks, and click Backup/Restore Configuration.
2. In the Backups list box, click the version of the Automatic Backup file that you want to restore, and click Restore. If prompted for a password, type the password you chose to secure the backup.
3. When a confirmation message appears, click Yes.
4. Click OK, and then click Close.

I'll try that. Since there is no data in any of the databases would it be better to delete the databases and start again?

I have done some searches and I cannot connect to the database. Does it matter if there are 2 SQL servers, one my SQL and the other SQL server? Well can't connect to either tho. It's beginning to make my head hurt :D
