Hello all, I know this is a long shot, but had to try. Most people have moved on....

Since I'm still running Whs V1 in my X510's
I am thinking of upgrading with (4) 2 TB SSD, so looking for a good Air flow friendly 2.5 to 3.5 adapter that will work with the media smart backplane.

I'm sure I am not the first to do this,
I have used IcyDock products (raid) adapters and know they fit, but not much air flow.

The cheaper the better, even if it's just one of those metal 2 bend jobs, if it lines up the connectors correctly I would go for it....

Thx in advance and much luck to everybody

P.S. Testing a Server 2016 essentials on my DIY and so far I like it, need to see if it still works after I demote it to WorkGroup... lolololo

Take care out there!!!!!

Well all I can say is my first ozd ssd 2.5 came with a bracket adapter to 3.5 and it fit in the drive caddy of my ex490.
But I did have to fiddle with the position of the drive in the adapter because it has several holes to line the drive with the back middle left right or front.
Then it just snapped into the drive caddy.
It was a simple bracket with no external connector ports. so it still used the drive ports to align with the backplane.
But if you want to be sure it will fit have a look at this item.
Pricey but:

Thx, price is a mostly a non-issue, considering it will most likely last longer then me :-)
The little Red tabs (not sure what they do) hopefully will not get in the way.

I will try a couple of the (Came with ssd adapters) see if they work, if not, I will order one of these and try it.
May be awhile, but will post back...

Unless someone else has anything better????
Thx again Take Care!!!

The red tab is a button to open the door to insert/remove the ssd.
Here is the pdf for that adapter

Hey Guardian,

No apologies about v1 necessary. It's still super solid.

I was going to go with WD icepacks. Apparently you have to use the ones with the red circuit board, the ones with the green boards don't work. But didn't want to spend $70-$90 for the four of them. So I ended up with the ICY DOCK MB882SP-1S-3B. New, they're about $12. I ended up picking up three of them from a fleabay seller used for somewhat less.

The Icy Dock adapters are big enough to simulate the air restriction of a HDD (so the case fans have the best chance of redirecting air flow across the heatsink). Those StarTech units look like they would do the same but there's no way for drive heat to escape (do SSD's even generate heat?).

I happened to have one of those cheap HP metal jobs sitting around (PN# 654540-001) I'm using for my fourth drive. But I'm probably going to replace it with another Icy Dock adapter because it's more airflow restrictive.

BTW, check out the Micron 5100 & 5200 eco series. They have 2x the MBTF of even the Samsung pro and if you shop carefully they can be had for .10c per gb.

FYI.
Most SSD drives have a 70c limit in lieu of 60C.
