I stumbled across my old Aspire easyStore H340. It was working when I put it away. Not sure if it can support the large drives that are out now. Has anyone repurposed a headless unit with a different OS?

Thanks...

Johnny

I have not had the "Aspire easyStore H340" but have had EX-470's and have now x-510 running WHS V1.
I also have installed WHS 2011 on the servers with a VGA adapter so I could attach a screen/keyboard/mouse.

I assume you could install other OS's but being able to see would be better. There are still VGA adapters being sold on ebay that would fit that model.
Some of the NAS Free os'es can be loaded blind if you have the instructions. IE. load it on a pc and then swap that drive to the server and boot and then telnet or remote into it.

All of the things you would need to be tech savy enough to do it.

Thing is the hardware is not a power house by any means, If it was me I would stick (I am still using) WHS V1. Because it still works, but does have the 2 TB drive limit.

Hope this helps.

Let us know what you end up doing with it.....
Good Luck and enjoy.
